Young children are naturally very flexible and they love to move their bodies in new and different ways. As a non-competitive sport, yoga allows children to do their individual best and become more familiar with what their bodies can do. Besides the obvious benefits of exercising, yoga can sharpen a child’s ability to calm down and focus and encourages self confidence. When practiced regularly, yoga can help children become more aware of their thoughts and feelings.
What is a School Time Yoga Incursion?
Sessions run for 45 minutes and are a fun combination of breathing exercises (often with a parachute), modified and traditional yoga postures, games (theme based) to reinforce learnt postures and relaxation through guided imagery or massage.
Sessions can be themed to compliment current topics being discussed and explored such as Under the Sea, At the Beach, Transport, Playground or Healthy Eating. Sessions can cater to ANY theme, so don’t feel limited!
Themed classes engage children by having them use their prior (or new!) knowledge of the topic to move their bodies into different positions. For example a beach themed class, will have children become starfish, sharks, boats (in pairs and individually), dolphins, crabs and many more topic related poses before they are reinforced in a game and an action story. A final guided imagery (on the warm sand at the beach of course!) will complete the session.
All yoga mats, music and props are provided. All we need is a large, cleared space and a few minutes to set up!

How does a School Time Yoga incursion fit within the Early Years Learning Framework?
Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing: Children become strong in their emotional and social wellbeing.
This is addressed by giving children an opportunity to develop strategies to assist them to manage their frustration, distress and confusion when in a situation that makes them emotional. This is done through focused breathing exercises at the beginning of each session and relaxation and guided imagery at the conclusion of each session.
Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing: Children take increasing responsibility for their own health and physical wellbeing.
Through yoga, children engage in a combination of basic and increasingly complex fine and gross motor skills and movement patters. A wide variety of postures allows children to combine their movements with balance as they discover their natural center of balance and the focus necessary to hold their balance. As they move their bodies in and out of modified postures, children will demonstrate spatial awareness and increased confidence of what they can achieve.Special Offers Sign up to receive discounts and offers specially tailored to meet your needs
